SMN Warns of Torrential Rains Across Mexico as Priscilla Tracks Along Baja and Pacific Low Boosts Moisture

Forecasters link the unusually wet season to La Niña over abnormally warm Pacific waters.

Overview

  • ConaguaSMN forecasts for October 9 call for torrential totals of 150–250 mm in parts of San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz, Guerrero and Oaxaca, with very heavy rain also expected in Tamaulipas, Chiapas and Tabasco.
  • Tropical Storm Priscilla, moving parallel to Baja California Sur, is bringing strong winds, heavy rain and elevated seas to the peninsula, while a low off Guerrero and Michoacán with high development potential feeds widespread downpours in southern and central states.
  • Authorities highlight hazards including urban flooding, landslides, river overflows, dangerous surf on Pacific coasts from Oaxaca to Colima, fallen trees and reduced visibility for drivers.
  • The Valley of Mexico faces a cool, rainy day with strong storms in the State of Mexico and heavy showers in Mexico City, and northern highlands such as Chihuahua are set for near-freezing minima of 0–5 °C by early Friday.
  • SMN guidance indicates the rainy season should ease over central Mexico in the second half of October, with precipitation likely to persist in the south and southeast into early to mid‑November.
