SMN Issues Yellow Alerts for Storms, Mountain Snow and Zonda Winds Across Argentina

Officials urge precautions as yellow alerts signal disruptive conditions across lowlands to Andes.

Overview

  • Storm alerts cover Misiones, Formosa, Corrientes, Chaco, Buenos Aires, Catamarca, Jujuy, La Rioja, Salta, Santa Cruz, San Juan and Tierra del Fuego, according to the national weather service.
  • Forecasters expect heavy rain of 20–60 mm with locally higher totals, frequent lightning, hail and gusts reaching about 75 km/h in affected storm zones.
  • The southern cordillera of Mendoza is under a snowfall alert with 15–25 cm expected and possible whiteout conditions due to blowing snow at higher elevations.
  • Zonda wind advisories apply in the west of Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca, La Rioja and San Juan, with dry, warming gusts reported up to roughly 70 km/h.
  • Authorities advise avoiding outdoor exposure, steering clear of trees and power lines, not driving through flooded streets and keeping an emergency kit with a flashlight, radio, documents and a phone.
