SMN Issues New Yellow Storm Alerts for Seven Provinces Following Buenos Aires Storms

The SMN warns of isolated storms with damaging gusts, hail, and short, intense rain as the system shifts northwest.

Overview

  • In its Wednesday update, the weather service placed Formosa, northern Chaco, eastern Salta, southern San Luis, much of Mendoza, Neuquén and northern Río Negro under yellow alerts.
  • Forecasters anticipate 20–40 mm of rain in brief bursts with gusts up to 70 km/h, frequent lightning and the chance of hail in the alert zones.
  • Greater Buenos Aires dealt with Tuesday’s strongest activity, including a time‑bound alert for the capital from 3:00 to 8:59 p.m. and widespread thunderstorms across the metro area.
  • Earlier orange alerts targeted central Buenos Aires Province and sectors of Córdoba such as Río Cuarto, where storms were flagged for >90 km/h gusts and 50–80 mm or more of rain.
  • Looking ahead, Mendoza’s outlook points to renewed instability midweek with a provincewide peak of showers and storms on Thursday and local totals above 20 mm.
