SMN Flags Hotter Quarter for Argentina as Patagonia Faces Storm Alerts and Mexico Sees Heavy Rains

A fresh seasonal outlook points to hotter-than-normal months, highlighting concurrent short-term hazards from Patagonia to Mexico.

Overview

  • The Argentine weather service’s Oct–Dec outlook projects above-normal temperatures across most of the country, with near-normal values favored over the northwest and wetter odds in the far north alongside potential deficits from the west Pampas to north Patagonia.
  • Yellow and orange alerts remain in Patagonia for heavy rain and powerful westerly winds, with sustained speeds of 40–70 km/h and peak gusts reaching 90–120 km/h depending on zone.
  • Strong snowfall is forecast for Andean sectors of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut and Santa Cruz, where accumulations of 20–30 cm are expected with locally higher amounts.
  • After Saturday’s storms, the AMBA forecast improved on Sunday, and the SMN anticipates an early‑week warmup with highs near 30–33 °C in several northern and central provinces.
  • Mexico’s SMN/Conagua expects widespread heavy to intense rainfall from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 across numerous states, with 2–3 m surf along the Pacific side of Baja California under the distant influence of Hurricane Narda.
