Overview
- The National Museum of American History removed a 2021-added placard on President Trump’s two impeachments in late July, reverting its impeachment display to a 2008 version.
- A Smithsonian spokesperson said the temporary placard did not meet the exhibit’s appearance, location, timeline and presentation standards and obstructed the view of objects.
- The institution denied that any White House or government official asked for content to be removed during a system-wide content review prompted by Executive Order 14253.
- The earlier content review was initiated after President Trump’s March executive order targeted “improper ideology” across Smithsonian programs.
- Smithsonian officials have pledged to update the “Limits of Presidential Power” section in the coming weeks to include all four presidential impeachments alongside those of Jackson, Nixon and Clinton.
