Smithsonian Will Update Exhibit to Include Trump’s Impeachments

Attributing the placard’s removal to aesthetic standards rather than any administration request, the Smithsonian vows to restore all presidential impeachments within weeks.

Overview

  • The National Museum of American History removed a 2021-added placard on President Trump’s two impeachments in late July, reverting its impeachment display to a 2008 version.
  • A Smithsonian spokesperson said the temporary placard did not meet the exhibit’s appearance, location, timeline and presentation standards and obstructed the view of objects.
  • The institution denied that any White House or government official asked for content to be removed during a system-wide content review prompted by Executive Order 14253.
  • The earlier content review was initiated after President Trump’s March executive order targeted “improper ideology” across Smithsonian programs.
  • Smithsonian officials have pledged to update the “Limits of Presidential Power” section in the coming weeks to include all four presidential impeachments alongside those of Jackson, Nixon and Clinton.
