Smithsonian to Expand Udvar-Hazy Center With 44,000-Square-Foot Addition

A $60 million private campaign will fund a 20% addition to the Boeing Aviation Hangar to bring long-stored aircraft into public view by the end of 2028.

Overview

  • The addition is the first expansion of the center’s public spaces since its 2003 opening.
  • The project adds 44,000 square feet on the north end of the Boeing Aviation Hangar—about a 20% increase—and the facility will remain open during construction.
  • Completion is targeted for late 2028, after which the museum will begin moving aircraft and other artifacts into the new space.
  • The reconfigured layout will emphasize World War II aviation, with planned displays including Flak-Bait, Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby, the restored Sikorsky JRS-1, a de Havilland Mosquito, and the Franklin Texaco Eaglet.
  • Funding is being raised through a $60 million campaign with contributions from Steven and Christine Udvar-Házy, Charles and Lisa Simonyi, Sarah and Ross Perot Jr., the Thomas W. Haas Foundation, and Air Lease Corp.
