Smithsonian to Close Museums and National Zoo to Visitors Sunday as Shutdown Continues

The decision follows the expiration of reserve funds used to keep doors open during the funding lapse.

Overview

  • Smithsonian officials said all museums, research centers, and the National Zoo will be closed to the public starting Sunday, Oct. 12, with operating status to be updated once funding is restored.
  • Animal care at the National Zoo and the Conservation Biology Institute will continue, but live animal webcams, including the Giant Panda Cam, will be turned off during the closure.
  • The institution had relied on prior-year funds to remain open through Saturday, Oct. 11, after the federal shutdown began on Oct. 1.
  • The closures affect 17 museums in Washington, two museums in New York, the National Zoo, and eight research centers, while some D.C. venues such as the Kennedy Center remain open using non-appropriated funds.
  • D.C.’s tourism sector, which generated about $11.4 billion last year, is bracing for cancellations and reduced spending as peak-season visitors lose access to marquee attractions.
