Overview

  • The July removal of a placard noting Trump’s 2019 and 2021 impeachments was carried out for appearance, location, timeline and presentation reasons, the Smithsonian said.
  • The museum reverted its permanent exhibit to a 2008 version that lists only Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon as presidents who faced removal.
  • Officials rejected reports of White House pressure despite President Trump’s March executive order targeting “anti-American ideology” in Smithsonian museums.
  • Secretary Lonnie Bunch’s curatorial authority was reaffirmed by the Board of Regents in June, triggering a content review across all 21 Smithsonian museums before the exhibit change.
  • The National Museum of American History will update its Impeachment gallery in the coming weeks to include all four presidential impeachment proceedings.
