Smithsonian Restores Pre-2008 Impeachment Display, Omitting Trump’s Two Impeachments

The museum describes the move as a temporary step in a broader review, with a funded curatorial process poised to restore all presidential impeachments

In September 2021, the Smithsonian placed a board over the exhibit which read: “Case under redesign (history happens*)” and referenced Trump’s two impeachments.

Overview

  • In July the National Museum of American History removed references to President Trump’s two impeachments and reverted its “Limits of Presidential Power” exhibit to its original 2008 design
  • A Smithsonian spokesperson said the temporary 2021 label on Trump’s impeachments was meant as a short-term measure and noted that the rest of the gallery had not been updated since 2008
  • Smithsonian officials initiated the legacy content review after White House pressure over museum leadership prompted scrutiny of exhibit bias and governance
  • In June the Smithsonian Board of Regents reaffirmed the institution’s independent curatorial authority and launched an assessment to align displays with nonpartisan scholarship
  • Museum leaders affirm that a comprehensive exhibit update—including documentation of all presidential impeachments—will proceed once funding is secured and curatorial work is completed
