Overview

  • The presidential impeachment section within ‘The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden’ now permanently includes descriptions of both of Trump’s impeachments alongside coverage of earlier proceedings against Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon.
  • A temporary placard installed in September 2021 was removed in July because it blocked part of the display case and conflicted with exhibit design guidelines ahead of a permanent update.
  • Revised text now labels allegations of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in Trump’s first impeachment as “alleged” and trims language about “false statements” from the second impeachment description.
  • The update follows a March executive order that prompted a Smithsonian-wide content review and a June resolution by the Board of Regents reaffirming the institution’s independent curatorial authority.
  • The Smithsonian said the changes uphold its commitment to thoughtful design and intellectual integrity while responding to earlier criticism of potential political interference.
