Small Quakes Rattle Peru and Chiapas as Agencies Report No Major Damage

SASMEX thresholds kept alerts silent, with officials emphasizing building safety and readiness.

Overview

  • Peru’s IGP confirmed a magnitude 4.0 quake at 01:02 on Nov. 5 near Ica, located 34 km southwest of Palpa at a depth of 32 km.
  • A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Loreto at 02:14 on Nov. 4, 57 km south of Andoas at 41 km depth, and was felt at Mercalli intensity III in Andoas, marking the fourth felt tremor in Peru that day.
  • Mexico’s SSN reported a magnitude 3.0 event near Pichucalco, Chiapas at 04:18 on Nov. 4 with a 4.1 km depth, which did not activate the national alert because SASMEX thresholds require stronger or closer quakes.
  • SSN later logged a magnitude 4.1 quake off Tonalá, Chiapas at 15:44 on Nov. 4, 122 km to the southwest at 15.5 km depth, with no reported injuries or damage as local and state authorities maintained preventive monitoring.
  • IGP chief Hernando Tavera urged construction on safe soils and adherence to technical standards, stressing ongoing preparedness to reduce seismic risk in one of the world’s most active regions.
