Sly Stone, Funk-Rock Trailblazer, Dies at 82

After a prolonged battle with COPD, the Sly and the Family Stone frontman passed away on June 9 surrounded by his three children.

  • Stone died peacefully after a prolonged battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other underlying health issues.
  • As frontman of Sly and the Family Stone, he pioneered a racially and gender-integrated lineup and a genre-blending funk-rock sound.
  • His hits “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People” and albums like Stand! and There’s a Riot Goin’ On reshaped pop and influenced generations of artists.
  • Personal struggles with drug addiction in the late 1970s and ’80s sidelined his career before he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and returned for a 2006 Grammy tribute.
  • He had recently completed a screenplay of his life story following his 2024 memoir and is survived by three children.
