Slow-Moving Nor’easter Batters Mid-Atlantic With Coastal Flooding and Outages

Officials warn the afternoon high tide could trigger another round of moderate to major flooding.

Overview

  • Flooded roads and rough surf forced closures across the Jersey Shore, including Route 147 into North Wildwood and both the White Horse Pike and Route 40 in Atlantic City.
  • Beach access points are barricaded as 12 to 18 foot waves and northeast gusts up to about 50 mph drive dangerous surf, erosion and inundation.
  • Thousands are without power with about 9,900 customers out in New Jersey and roughly 3,900 on Long Island, as utilities add crews and urge residents to prepare for additional outages.
  • New Jersey remains under a statewide emergency, and New York’s governor declared emergencies for New York City, Long Island and Westchester, with Nassau County issuing its own order.
  • NJ Transit reduced some service with systemwide cross-honoring in effect through Monday, and New York City’s Columbus Day parade was canceled because of the storm and emergency orders.
