Overview

  • Lawmakers approved amendments that recognize only two sexes defined at birth, with changes allowed only for serious reasons under procedures to be set by law.
  • Adoption is limited to married couples with rare exceptions, and comprehensive sexuality education is restricted across the country.
  • The package passed 90–7 in the 150-seat chamber after much of the opposition stayed away from the vote.
  • Amnesty International condemned the measures as breaching EU and international human rights law and said they will harm transgender, non-binary and other marginalized groups.
  • The Council of Europe’s Venice Commission and UN Special Rapporteurs had cautioned that a strict binary in the constitution and a redefinition of national identity could conflict with Slovakia’s treaty obligations.
