Sölden World Cup Opener Confirmed for 24–25 October

Live coverage is arranged on ARD and Eurosport; recent injuries and the cancellation of two Narvik speed races have altered start lists and forced a search for replacement venues.

Overview

  • The traditional Riesenslalom opener on the Rettenbach Glacier will go ahead on 24–25 October with first runs at 10:00 and second runs at 13:00, and broadcasters ARD and Eurosport will show the races live.
  • The German Ski Association named a ten-athlete squad for Sölden led by Emma Aicher, who enters the season as Germany’s top contender after a breakthrough 2025/26 campaign.
  • Field changes arrived late in the build-up: Canadian Valerie Grenier withdrew from Sölden after suffering a knee injury that requires surgery, and Andorran Joan Verdu suffered a dramatic but non-injurious training crash and is fit to continue.
  • FIS announced on 19 October that the two women’s speed races planned for 12–13 March 2027 in Narvik have been cancelled because the venue was not ready, and officials are seeking replacement sites for the Abfahrt and Super-G.
  • With several high-profile absences already reported and a compressed early calendar, the opener will offer early clues about form and momentum while organisers and FIS manage calendar and safety pressures for later speed events.
