Slab Collapse During Construction in Harsh Vihar Kills Two

Preliminary inspections point to casting a new slab over a weak old roof as the trigger, prompting police to open legal and technical probes.

Overview

  • Rescuers recovered two men from the rubble during an overnight operation after a slab of an under‑construction house in Milan Garden, Harsh Vihar, gave way on Sunday evening, Oct. 25.
  • The victims were identified as contractor Chanderpal, 60, and his son Vijay Kumar, 33, who had taken the construction contract and were declared dead at GTB Hospital after being pulled out.
  • Teams from the Delhi Fire Service, NDRF, Delhi Police, DDMA and Civil Defence led the response, using cranes and heavy equipment to clear debris and search through the night.
  • Police said they have traced the property owner, Manoj Kumar, and have initiated legal action while a formal technical inquiry continues to establish whether violations or weak existing roof work caused the collapse.
  • The collapse is the latest in a string of recent Delhi failures involving additions to ageing structures and unauthorised works, a pattern that has increased scrutiny of building inspections and enforcement.
