Skysurfer Rides Bay Bridge Cables, Lands on Barge in Red Bull Stunt

The feat followed 18 months of Red Bull–led design, testing, permitting.

Overview

  • Sean MacCormac jumped from a helicopter at roughly 5,000 to 5,500 feet, deployed his parachute, rode the western span’s suspension cables for several seconds, then touched down on a floating barge.
  • The successful run came on a second attempt at about 9:36 a.m. after fog delays and an initial try that did not stick.
  • Caltrans spokesperson Bart Ney said westbound traffic was briefly held at the toll plaza for two closures of about 8 to 10 minutes each, totaling roughly 15 minutes.
  • Red Bull coordinated approvals with Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard, and Mavericks Rescue staged water safety beneath the bridge.
  • Prada’s Luna Rossa team built a custom board using carbon fiber, a honeycomb core and an HDPE base to withstand cable abrasion and avoid snagging.
