SK Telecom Swings to Q3 Loss as Data-Breach Costs Crush Earnings

Management points to hefty customer compensation plus a privacy watchdog fine as the main drag on results.

Overview

  • The carrier posted a net loss of 166.7 billion won for July–September, with operating profit down 90.9 percent to 48.4 billion won and revenue off 12.2 percent to 3.97 trillion won, and it suspended its third-quarter dividend.
  • SK Telecom said a roughly 500 billion-won customer compensation program weighed on the quarter after the April incident exposed user risks.
  • The Personal Information Protection Commission’s 1.35 trillion won fine further pressured earnings during the period.
  • Measures rolled out since July, including a waiver of contract termination fees and a 50 percent mobile fee discount, raised churn and reduced sales in the short term.
  • The company reported signs of stabilization and expansion in new areas, citing a 240,000 increase in 5G subscribers to 17.26 million, a 35.7 percent AI sales jump, data center revenue of 149.8 billion won, an Ulsan build with AWS, and an OpenAI-linked data center plan.
