SK Telecom and AWS Break Ground on GPU-Optimized AI Data Center in Ulsan

The facility is slated to begin phased operations in late 2027 to anchor South Korea’s push for advanced AI infrastructure.

Overview

  • SK Telecom and SK Ecoplant started construction Friday with Amazon Web Services and the Ulsan city government, aiming for the country’s largest AI center outside the capital region.
  • About 200 people attended the ceremony, including SK Supex Council Chair Chey Chang-won, SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang, SK Ecoplant CEO Kim Hyung-keun, Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom and AWS Korea Executive Shin Jae-won.
  • The hyperscale build integrates AWS technical requirements with GPU-optimized systems, ultradense racks and hybrid air-and-water cooling engineered for 20–40 kW GPU racks and 40–100 kW cooling per rack.
  • Ulsan was chosen for reliable gas supply and subsea cable access, with SK Gas and SK Multi Utility providing combined heat-and-power electricity to improve cost stability and the carbon profile.
  • SK Telecom plans to make the site a core node of its AI infrastructure superhighway, linking data centers nationwide with GPU-as-a-service and edge networks to bolster national competitiveness.
