Sixteen Killed in Spain’s First Summer Getaway Road Operation

Overview

  • The DGT recorded 16 deaths across 15 incidents during the July 4–6 summer getaway operation.
  • Ten of those killed were vulnerable road users, comprising six motorcyclists, three pedestrians and a moped driver.
  • Eleven accidents occurred on conventional one-lane roads, while four took place on highways or motorways.
  • Spain’s year-to-date road fatality toll has risen to 549 compared with 243 deaths in the same period last summer.
  • The DGT has scheduled five more special operations through late August as it prepares for an estimated 100 million trips this season.
