Six Texas Hikers Safely Rescued After 25-Hour Ordeal on Greenhorn Mountain

Rescuers spent nearly 25 hours battling rain-soaked, steep terrain to locate the missing hikers.

Overview

  • The group, including five minors, called for help around 7:30 p.m. May 30 after their phone GPS guided them off Greenhorn Mountain’s designated trail near Graneros Creek.
  • Volunteer search teams from Pueblo and Custer counties combed dense, rain-soaked forest overnight despite limited visibility and steep slopes.
  • A high-angle rescue helicopter deployed by the Colorado National Guard hoisted an injured search and rescue member to safety before ground teams reached the hikers.
  • Four hikers were located at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and the remaining two juveniles, who had separated to find the trail, were found roughly an hour later.
  • The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office warned hikers to stay on marked trails, share their plans and pack emergency gear such as flashlights, fire starters and emergency blankets.
