Six Shot, One Slashed After West Indian Day Parade as NYPD Detains Person of Interest

The event took place under the year's largest NYPD deployment following last year's fatal shooting.

  • Police reported four separate incidents across Crown Heights between about 5:35 p.m. and 7 p.m. as parade crowds dispersed.
  • Around 5:35 p.m. near 1098 Eastern Parkway, a woman in her 40s was grazed in the lower back and a man in his 20s was shot in the leg, with both hospitalized in stable condition.
  • A man was slashed near Eastern Parkway and Nostrand Avenue around 6 p.m. and refused medical treatment; at 6:46 p.m., two men were shot near Classon Avenue and Eastern Parkway and were listed in stable condition.
  • Minutes later near Nostrand Avenue and Sterling Street, a 53-year-old man was shot in the neck and leg and was in critical condition while a 40-year-old woman was shot in the ankle and was stable.
  • NYPD said a person of interest was taken into custody in connection with the Nostrand and Sterling shooting, with investigations continuing and no determination yet on whether the incidents are connected.
