Six Pilgrims Die in Three Crashes on Kanwar Yatra Highways

Investigations follow the seizure of implicated vehicles with drone surveillance bolstering highway patrols.

Overview

  • Three accidents on July 20 left at least six pilgrims dead and more than a dozen injured along major Kanwar routes in Uttar Pradesh.
  • A speeding ambulance on the Delhi-Meerut road near Kadarabad village in Ghaziabad struck a group of scooter and bike riders, killing three and injuring at least three others.
  • In Sambhal district, one pilgrim died and three were hurt when their motorcycle tried to overtake on a narrow stretch and collided with an oncoming tractor.
  • Two separate collisions between motorcycles on the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway in Muzaffarnagar district resulted in two deaths and eight serious injuries.
  • Police have impounded the vehicles involved, dispatched bodies for post-mortems and are coordinating drone feeds and command centres to monitor traffic flow and improve pilgrim safety.
