Six Maoists, Including Leaders Urmila and Buchanna, Killed in Bijapur Operation

Police say the intelligence-led raid dealt a major blow to Maoist logistics in south Bastar.

  • A joint DRG and STF team launched the Nov. 11 operation in forests between Kandulnar and Kachlaram in Bijapur after intelligence on the presence of senior cadres, leading to a prolonged gunfight.
  • Police confirmed the deaths of Urmila, secretary of the Pamed Area Committee and a key logistics handler for PLGA units, and Buchanna alias Kanna, a longtime commander linked to major attacks.
  • Six bodies were recovered along with two INSAS rifles, a 9mm carbine, other firearms, explosives, communication gear, Maoist literature, uniforms and medical supplies.
  • Investigators are examining seized documents and digital devices for possible urban support links, and police said some senior leaders managed to escape the encounter.
  • The other four deceased were identified as ACM Jagat Tamo alias Motu and platoon members Deve, Bhagat and Mangli Oyam, with the group carrying rewards totaling Rs 27 lakh in a year officials say includes 144 neutralisations, 499 arrests and 560 surrenders in Bijapur.
