Six Dead in Separate Uttarakhand Gorge Crashes in Tehri and Chamoli

Investigators say loss of control on steep mountain stretches is suspected in both cases.

Overview

  • In Tehri district, an SUV carrying five people from Shyampur to Pavki Devi Nai for a wedding plunged roughly 200–300 metres off the Gular-Motor road late Wednesday.
  • SDRF and local police conducted an overnight rescue, hospitalising Nikhil Ramola, 21, and Tanuj Pundir, 26, and recovering the bodies of Vimal Kandiyal, 31, Rahul Kaluda, 23, and Ashish Kaluda, 26.
  • One injured survivor shared a Google location that helped teams reach the Tehri crash site, officials said.
  • In a separate incident near Devkhal in Chamoli, a car fell into a gorge on the Gopeshwar–Pokhari road and caught fire, killing Arvind Tripathi, Anita Tripathi and Anant Swaroop Tripathi; Ambuj Tripathi was injured.
  • Police confirmed both recoveries and hospitalisations and said formal investigations are underway into how the vehicles went off steep, narrow roads during nighttime travel.
