Six Dead in Karnataka NH-48 Bus Fire After Truck Jumps Divider

Investigators attribute the blaze to a divider breach that likely ruptured the bus’s diesel tank, prompting a criminal case.

Overview

  • Police confirmed six fatalities, including a five-year-old girl, and reported dozens injured after a container truck crossed into oncoming traffic near Javanagondanahalli in Hiriyur, Chitradurga, around 2 a.m.
  • The Seabird sleeper bus was traveling from Bengaluru toward Gokarna with 33 people onboard when it caught fire within moments of impact on National Highway 48.
  • An FIR for rash and negligent driving has been registered against the truck driver as investigators examine speed, fatigue, and the reported strike on the bus’s diesel tank.
  • Injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Hiriyur, Sira, Tumakuru and to Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru for burn care, where one patient remains critical and others are stable.
  • Authorities said severely charred victims will be identified through DNA testing, and both the Prime Minister and the Karnataka Chief Minister announced ex‑gratia payments to the bereaved and the injured.
