Six Colombians held as suspects in Ecuadorian presidential candidate's murder killed in prison days before election

  • Six Colombian prisoners charged with murdering Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio were killed in a Guayaquil prison.
  • The killings occurred in Litoral Penitentiary, known as one of Ecuador's most dangerous prisons.
  • Villavicencio had reported threats from Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel before his assassination in August.
  • President Guillermo Lasso condemned the killings and convened a security meeting to address the crisis.
  • The murders happened just eight days before the presidential election runoff vote on October 15th.
