Six Climbers Detained After Breaking into Cologne Cathedral at Night

Police intercepted the group during a dangerous descent, initiating a criminal investigation for trespassing and property damage.

A group of six climbers, including five French citizens and one Belgian, unlawfully entered the Cologne Cathedral during the night of April 13, 2025.
The climbers were detected via private camera surveillance, which alerted the cathedral’s security service and police to their presence.
Police surrounded the cathedral and deployed a helicopter to monitor the climbers as they attempted a hazardous descent from the northern tower.
Authorities discovered forcibly opened doors, abandoned climbing gear, and confiscated items including a camera, mobile phone, and picklock tool from one suspect.
The individuals, aged 18 to 27, are now facing criminal charges for trespassing and property damage as investigations proceed.
