Six Arrested Over Nazi Salutes at Hesse Fair as State Security Opens Probe

State security now leads the probe under Germany’s laws on hate speech plus unconstitutional symbols.

  • Police were called around 10:45 p.m. Saturday after a group allegedly gave the Hitler salute and shouted hate slogans at the Niedenstein-Ermetheis fair.
  • The six left by car but were stopped in Gudensberg, where officers arrested the suspects without reported incident.
  • Authorities identified five men aged 22 to 42 and a 19-year-old woman from Neukirchen, Schrecksbach and Willingshausen.
  • Witnesses told police some appeared intoxicated and said one man displayed tattoos including a swastika and SS runes.
  • The Kriminalinspektion Staatsschutz of the North Hesse police is conducting further investigations into suspected Volksverhetzung and the use of banned symbols, with formal charges not yet announced.
