Six Arrested in South Mumbai Jeweller’s Abduction, Most of Rs 79 Lakh Haul Recovered

Police attribute the attack to a prior gold transaction dispute.

Overview

  • The victim was forced into a car by three men and a woman near Old Hanuman Galli on October 14 and confined in a Parel flat, where he was assaulted.
  • The assailants coerced him to hand over 591 grams of gold worth about Rs 76.23 lakh, transferred Rs 15,000 via UPI, and sign a cheque for Rs 2.99 lakh, totaling roughly Rs 79.37 lakh.
  • LT Marg police arrested Tarak Maiti, Raghunath Maiti, Deepak Mahadik, Alka Mahadik, Rahul Dive, and Sunil Gorai, and said the case stems from a dispute over a previous gold deal.
  • Officers recovered the gold and cash from the accused, registered an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions including sections 140 and 61, and produced the suspects in court.
  • All six have been remanded to police custody until October 18, and investigators say they are searching for at least one additional suspect.
