Six Arrested and Civic Crackdown After Satya Niketan PG Collapse

Official filings say unauthorised repairs and excess load caused the September 6 collapse and have triggered criminal charges, mass inspections and a push for new rules for student housing.

Overview

  • A five-storey paying-guest building in Satya Niketan collapsed during repair work on September 6, killing seven people including five students and injuring others.
  • Delhi Police told the High Court in a status report that six people have been arrested and that unauthorised structural alterations and added load likely weakened the old, load-bearing building.
  • The Municipal Corporation of Delhi said in its affidavit that the collapsed property had no sanctioned plan, used thin 4.5-inch load-bearing walls without an RCC frame, and may have been weakened by water seepage.
  • MCD carried out a time-bound citywide inspection after the collapse and reported that between September 6 and 23 it demolished 543 properties, sealed 178, issued 354 show-cause notices and suspended five officers pending inquiry.
  • The Delhi government has set up an 18-member High-Powered Committee to draft a regulatory framework for PGs and private hostels and ordered structural audits and central registration portals while the High Court continues to hear related PILs seeking compensation and relief.
