Investigators now link R122 million in suspect payments to a scheme under active asset freezes.

Overview

  • Zacharia Tshisele was arrested and charged in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court after an SIU probe into procurement irregularities at Tembisa Hospital.
  • Prosecutors allege Tshisele and Hawks Sergeant Papi Tsie offered a Hawks investigator a R100,000 bribe on 23 November to help Tshisele avoid prosecution.
  • The court postponed the case to 2 December for a bail application, and both accused remain in custody.
  • The SIU says Tshisele paid R13,530,904.27 in November as a partial recovery, and civil action to reclaim additional proceeds continues.
  • The investigation has identified R122,228,000 in corrupt payments, at least 15 implicated officials, 116 disciplinary referrals, and asset preservation moves including a R900 million order and about R133.5 million preserved in October.
