Sitharaman Orders Clearance of 2.25 Lakh Pending Tax Appeals

  • The finance minister directed officials to resolve 2.25 lakh of 5.77 lakh pending appeals in FY 2025-26, covering over ₹10 lakh crore in disputed demands
  • Refunds for the current fiscal have jumped 58 percent year-on-year, with ₹23,376 crore issued via effect orders and ₹10,496 crore through rectification
  • Tax grievance platforms CPGRAMS and e-Nivaran have achieved an 82.3 percent disposal rate by addressing 1,31,844 of 1,60,229 complaints
  • Monetary thresholds for appeals were raised to ₹60 lakh before the ITAT, ₹2 crore for high courts and ₹5 crore for the Supreme Court, and departmental cases below these limits must be withdrawn within three months
  • The CBDT has been tasked with simplifying compliance procedures and preparing training and awareness campaigns for the upcoming Income Tax Bill
