SIT Moves to Seventh Site After Uncovering Bone Fragments at Sixth Dharmasthala Pit

Forensic teams are conducting DNA testing of bone fragments from site six to guide the next phase of exhumations

  • The Special Investigation Team recovered about 15 bone fragments at a depth of four feet during digging at the sixth location near the Netravathi river bathing ghat
  • Recovered fragments have been secured under tight security and dispatched to the Forensic Science Laboratory for DNA profiling and detailed analysis
  • Excavation work has now begun at the seventh of 13 sites identified by the former sanitation worker whistleblower
  • Witness protection measures and heightened security cordons remain in place to safeguard the complainant and preserve evidence integrity
  • The SIT was formed under DGP Pranav Mohanty after allegations that hundreds of bodies, some showing signs of sexual violence, were clandestinely buried between 1995 and 2014
