SIT Arrests Medical Shop Owner in India Cough Syrup Case, Marking Seventh Detention

The arrest signals the probe's expansion to retail links in a case targeting failures across the drug supply chain.

Overview

  • Police said Jyoti Soni, proprietor of a Parasia medical store that sold Coldrif to victims, was detained on Monday night.
  • Her husband, Dr. Praveen Soni of Chhindwara, was arrested last month for alleged negligence after prescribing the syrup to many affected children.
  • Investigators report seven arrests overall, including Sresan Pharma owner G. Ranganathan and supply-chain actors such as a medical representative, a wholesaler, a chemist and a pharmacist.
  • State testing found one Coldrif sample contained 48.6% diethylene glycol, far above the 0.1% impurity limit, and the WHO issued an alert naming Coldrif, Respifresh TR and ReLife as substandard.
  • Authorities canceled Sresan Pharma’s licence, sealed its unit, banned the syrup in multiple states, and suspended two Madhya Pradesh drug regulators as the SIT continues its probe.
