SIT Arrests Doctor’s Wife in Madhya Pradesh Coldrif Child-Death Case

Police say she ran the shop that sold the contaminated syrup, taking a 27% commission.

Overview

  • Jyoti Soni was detained in Parasia as the seventh accused in the case and was remanded to three days’ police custody on allegations of destroying evidence.
  • Her husband, Dr. Praveen Soni, was arrested earlier for alleged negligence after prescribing Coldrif to many of the affected children.
  • Those already in custody include Sresan Pharma owner G. Ranganathan, company chemist K. Maheshwari, medical representative Satish Verma, wholesaler Rajesh Soni, and pharmacist Sourabh Jain.
  • Madhya Pradesh testing found 48.6% diethylene glycol in a Coldrif sample against a 0.1% limit, with at least 24 children reported dead from kidney failure after receiving the syrup.
  • Regulators revoked Sresan Pharma’s licence and sealed its plant, multiple states banned Coldrif, and the WHO issued an alert naming Coldrif, Respifresh TR, and ReLife as substandard.
