Sisters Charged in West Bridgewater Market Basket Assault Released on Recognizance

The sisters were released on recognizance with orders to avoid the store pending a Dec. 17 court date.

Overview

  • Police say the Oct. 26 confrontation began after employees at the West Center Street Market Basket suspected unpaid high-priced items and called 911.
  • According to the police report, the women concealed lobster meat, prime ribeye steaks, and truffle butter in a blue bag and left checkout without paying.
  • Officers and witnesses reported the pair screamed obscenities and racial slurs, and struck two employees with a bag of groceries and a purse, causing a minor facial laceration.
  • West Bridgewater police identified the suspects as sisters Olivia L. Byrd, 37, of Quincy, and Rahjane J. Byrd, 28, of Hyde Park, who were arraigned in Brockton District Court.
  • The defendants pleaded not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, shoplifting by asportation, and disorderly conduct, and police noted they cited an Instacart explanation without providing proof.
