Sir Jim Ratcliffe to Invest $300m in Manchester United Infrastructure, Purchase 25% Stake

Investment to fund much-needed upgrades for Old Trafford and Carrington training complex, as Ratcliffe seeks control over football decisions at the club.

  • Sir Jim Ratcliffe, owner of the INEOS petrochemicals company, is set to invest $300m of his personal wealth in Manchester United for infrastructure upgrades, which will come directly from his pocket and not add to the club's existing debt.
  • Ratcliffe plans to acquire a 25 percent stake in the club from the Glazer family, the current owners, which was on the market last year with an asking price of $8bn but was not met by any bidders.
  • The $300m investment will fund improvements at Old Trafford, Manchester United's 74,000-seater stadium, as well as at Carrington, their training complex, although this initial investment will not completely address all existing issues.
  • Negotiations have been ongoing with the Glazer family to gradually hand over ownership of Manchester United to Ratcliffe, with a deal expected to be announced in two weeks. This includes potential plans for the Glazers to retain a small stake in the club.
  • In return for his investment, Ratcliffe seeks control over and responsibility for sporting decisions at the club with the aim of reshaping the football operations in the INEOS image.
