Sinner Advances in Paris as Alcaraz Falls Early, Reopening the Race for No. 1

Only the Paris title puts Sinner briefly ahead on points, with the year-end lead decided at the ATP Finals in Turin.

Overview

  • Carlos Alcaraz lost his opening match at the Paris Masters to Cameron Norrie 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and said he didn’t feel well, calling it one of his worst matches of the year.
  • Jannik Sinner defeated Zizou Bergs 6-4, 6-2 to reach the last 16 and will face Francisco Cerundolo on Thursday not before 7 p.m. local at Paris La Défense Arena.
  • A Paris title would give Sinner 1,000 points and lift him to about 11,500, moving him past Alcaraz, who drops to roughly 11,250 after the defeat.
  • A runner-up finish would take Sinner to 11,150, which would not be enough to reclaim the top ranking.
  • The ATP Finals award up to 1,500 points and Sinner will forfeit last year’s 1,500 there next week, so any change after Paris could be temporary.
