Sinkhole Appears in San Francisco's Financial District, Interrupts Cable Car Service
A motorcyclist was injured after hitting the sinkhole, which was reportedly caused by a water main break.
- A sinkhole appeared on Tuesday evening along the California Street cable car tracks, near the intersection of Montgomery Street in San Francisco's Financial District.
- The sinkhole led to the suspension of California Street cable car service on Tuesday night, but service was restored as of Wednesday morning.
- A motorcyclist, Arwi Odense, hit the sinkhole and crashed, but was briefly hospitalized and later returned to the scene with his wife to retrieve his motorcycle.
- Authorities said that a pipe beneath the area where the sinkholes appeared had been isolated and shut down, but the exact cause remains unclear.
- Firefighters said the small sinkhole was caused by a water main break which was shooting water, at one point, 5-10 feet in the air.
