Singareni Collieries, NFTDC Sign Pact to Build Rare Earth Pilot Plant in Kothagudem

The project, part of a state-guided diversification push, will generate data to determine whether commercial-scale extraction is viable.

Overview

  • SCCL and the Government of India’s NFTDC executed the agreement in Hyderabad, with CMD N. Balaram and Director K. Balasubramanian signing.
  • The pilot facility at Kothagudem will analyze mine overburden, fly ash from SCCL thermal plants, plus other waste streams to attempt experimental production of rare earth elements.
  • NFTDC’s preliminary work has identified traces of rare earths in overburden and fly ash within Singareni operational areas.
  • Construction of the pilot is slated to begin soon as SCCL pursues diversification into critical minerals under Telangana government direction.
  • Results on concentration levels, processing performance, and economics will determine whether SCCL advances to larger commercial plants.
