Overview
- The Singapore Police announced the package on Friday that lowers demerit thresholds and lengthens suspension and ban periods.
- The new rules take effect on Jan 1, 2027, with a phased step to stop issuing Safe Driving Course offers from Aug 1, 2026.
- Non-probationary motorists’ threshold is cut from 24 to 18 points in 24 months and probationary motorists’ from 13 to 12 in 12 months.
- First-time suspensions rise to four months (reducible to six weeks with the DIPS Retraining Course), second suspensions to six months, third to two years and later suspensions to five years, with licence loss and full retesting for bans over a year.
- A one-time transitional deduction will waive up to six points for non-probationary drivers and one point for probationary drivers, and motorists can check records via the police e-services portal or Singpass digital driving licence.
