Singapore Sets 5% Public Transport Fare Rise From Dec. 27, With Adult Card Fares Up 9–10 Cents

The transport council kept the increase far below the 14.4% cap to protect affordability as costs climb.

Overview

  • For the first time, the express‑bus premium will rise by S$0.40 for adults and S$0.20 for concession card users, with a S$0.60 increase for cash payments, reflecting higher operating costs for services that account for about 1% of daily bus trips.
  • Cash fares will go up by S$0.05 for students, S$0.10 for seniors and people with disabilities, and S$0.20 for adults, a larger step aimed at covering the higher cost of handling cash, which is used in under 1% of journeys.
  • Monthly pass prices will be cut by up to 5% for adults, seniors and eligible concession users, benefiting about 155,000 commuters, and S$60 Public Transport Vouchers for lower‑income households will continue.
  • Rail operators SBS Transit Rail and SMRT Trains must contribute 20% of their expected revenue gains, totaling S$10.65 million, to the Public Transport Fund that supports fare vouchers.
  • The government will provide over S$200 million in additional subsidy next year, and the PTC will shift its fare‑calculation window to July–June using an 18‑month bridge this year, reducing the deferred quantum from 12.9% to 9.4% for future reviews.
