Singapore Parliament Declares Pritam Singh Unsuitable to Remain Leader of the Opposition

The formal decision now rests with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong after a non-binding motion passed following a three-hour debate.

Overview

  • Lawmakers approved the motion stating Pritam Singh’s conduct and conviction fell short of standards expected of the opposition leader, with PAP MPs and attending NMPs in support and all 11 WP MPs voting against; one NCMP was not present.
  • Pritam Singh rejected the characterisation of his conduct as dishonourable, said his conscience remains clear, disagreed with court and committee findings, and lifted the WP whip to allow a free vote.
  • The Leader of the Opposition designation is conferred by the prime minister, and Parliament’s vote expresses a view but does not itself remove Singh from the role.
  • Singh’s conviction on two counts of lying to the Committee of Privileges was upheld by the High Court on Dec 4, 2025, resulting in fines totalling S$14,000 without loss of his seat or an election ban.
  • The Workers’ Party has formed a disciplinary panel to assess whether Singh breached its constitution, with the process expected to conclude within about three months, as some NMPs urged him to step down voluntarily.
