Singapore Orders Sammy Obeid to Post POFMA Corrections Over Censorship Claims

Officials say the permit was denied for a late application.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Digital Development and Information issued a POFMA correction direction requiring Sammy Obeid to add notices to his Aug 27 posts on Facebook, Instagram, and X.
  • Authorities said IMDA never requested script edits or discussed content with Obeid or his representatives and stated the cancellation was unrelated to content.
  • Officials detailed that Obeid’s assistant sought guidance on July 8, the licence application was filed on Aug 15 for an Aug 31 show, IMDA flagged it as too late on Aug 19, an appeal was lodged on Aug 20, and the decision was reaffirmed on Aug 25.
  • Law Minister Edwin Tong called Obeid’s account “completely fictional” and said the government is considering further steps.
  • Obeid posted clips of an unidentified caller urging removal of references to Palestine and Israel, which MDDI said did not involve IMDA, and more than 1,000 ticket holders were offered exchanges for other tour stops after the Aug 31 Victoria Theatre shows were canceled.
