Singapore Named First Airport Testbed for CFM RISE Open‑Fan Engines

The pact creates a real‑world program to develop a readiness blueprint for integrating open‑fan propulsion into airport operations.

Overview

  • CAAS, CFM International and Airbus signed an MoU on Feb. 2 at the 3rd Changi Aviation Summit to launch the airport testbed initiative.
  • Operational trials of RISE open‑fan demonstrators are planned at Changi or Seletar to validate procedures, safety standards, regulatory steps and potential infrastructure changes.
  • CFM’s open‑fan architecture targets more than 20% better fuel efficiency with lower emissions and noise, and it is intended to be compatible with hybrid‑electric systems and sustainable aviation fuel.
  • Project leaders named in the signing were CAAS Director‑General Han Kok Juan, Safran Singapore CEO David Dufrenois on behalf of CFM, and Airbus executive Rémi Maillard.
  • Related summit announcements included a SAFCo purchasing trial by nine organizations ahead of Singapore’s Oct. 1 green fuel levy and the SPAARC research partnership with EDB, GE Aerospace and ICAI, while GE and Safran plan an A380 RISE flight demonstrator around 2029.
