Singapore Marks 35 Years of China Ties, Urges Faster Trade Upgrades and Wider Cooperation

Leaders highlighted digital and green initiatives, pointing to the next JCBC meeting in Chongqing.

  • President Tharman, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan sent Oct 3 letters to their Chinese counterparts to commemorate the anniversary.
  • Mr Wong called for expedited implementation of the upgraded China–Singapore FTA, the China–ASEAN Free Trade Area and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
  • The letters emphasized expanding collaboration in the digital and green economies, finance, clean and renewable energy, food security and deeper financial cooperation.
  • DPM Gan noted the Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation remains a key platform and said he looks forward to meeting Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang at the upcoming JCBC session in Chongqing this year.
  • Leaders cited continuing progress in government-to-government projects in Suzhou, Tianjin and Chongqing and the state-level Guangzhou project, while reaffirming support for free trade, multilateralism and a rules-based international order through bodies such as the WTO and APEC.
