Singapore Man, 69, Jailed 20 Years for Raping Step-Granddaughter

The case surfaced after the child disclosed the abuse to a school counsellor following self-harm.

Overview

  • He pleaded guilty to one count of raping a minor and one of sexual assault by penetration, with 12 other charges taken into consideration.
  • The offences occurred between 2016 and 2017 on at least nine occasions when the girl was nine to ten and living in a one-room arrangement with him and her grandmother.
  • After the July 27, 2020 disclosure, the school notified Child Protective Service, a police report was lodged that night, and he was arrested on Sept 2 and remanded.
  • Justice Aidan Xu called the acts "wicked" and noted little leniency was warranted, with prosecutors seeking 18 to 20 years and no caning because he is over 50.
  • A clinical assessment found the now 18-year-old met criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder and had a history of self-harm and passive suicidal wishes.
