Singapore Jails, Canes Two Indian Tourists for Robbing Sex Workers

The pair pleaded guilty to causing hurt during robbery, an offence that carries mandatory caning.

Overview

  • Arokkiyasami Daison, 23, and Rajendran Mayilarasan, 27, were each sentenced to five years and one month in prison with 12 strokes of the cane after guilty pleas.
  • The men arranged separate hotel meetings and assaulted two sex workers, tying the first with clothing and slapping her before stealing jewellery, SGD 2,000, a passport and bank cards.
  • In a later robbery, they dragged a second victim, covered her mouth and took SGD 800, two mobile phones and a passport, then told her not to leave.
  • The offences were reported after the second victim disclosed the attack the next day, prompting a police call and investigation.
  • Court records state they arrived from India on April 24 and used contact numbers provided by an unknown man; they were unrepresented in court and cited financial hardship, while the law sets a range of five to 20 years with at least 12 strokes for such offences.
