Overview

  • Pannir Selvam Pranthaman, 38, was hanged at Changi Prison after his final appeal failed and clemency was denied, an activist accompanying his family said.
  • He was arrested in 2014 with about 52 grams of heroin and sentenced to death in 2017 under Singapore’s Misuse of Drugs Act.
  • Courts found he was a courier, but prosecutors declined to issue a substantive-assistance certificate, which would have allowed a lesser sentence.
  • Malaysian police interviewed him on Sept. 27, yet Malaysia’s home ministry said he provided no new leads to support further investigation.
  • His execution follows another Malaysian’s hanging on Sept. 25, bringing Singapore’s 2025 total to 12, with activists saying more than 40 people remain on death row.
